Nigerian Teachers Task FG To Secure Schools Ahead Polls

Ahead of next month’s general elections, the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, has charged the Federal Government to urgently address the security challenges in the country in order to ensure free, fair and credible elections.
Making the statement at the weekend was NUT President, Comrade Michael Alogba Olukoya, during the union’s 2015 annual Solemn Assembly, organisedin Abuja.
The Daily Trust reports that the event was held to pray for the nation and for the release of over 200 schoolgirls abducted by the Boko Haram insurgents in Chibok, Borno State about eight months ago.

It was disclosed that the union also urged
security agencies in the country to increase efforts in quest to fight Boko Haram and ensuring that students and schools are adequately protected before, during and after the elections.
“This is an election year and we want all our security agencies to be up and doing to ensure that our schools are secured, our teachers are safe so that education can be moved to the next level.
“It is quite unfortunate that since this Boko Haram matter started, teachers and pupils have been the most affected victims. We don’t like it and it’s a challenge. But being a new year, I urge all the security operatives, be you the State Security Service, police, soldiers, to redouble their efforts to stem the tide,” Olukoya said.

Speaking on the austerity measures proposed by the Federal Government due to the slump in price of crude oil,  Olukoya stated that the union would vehemently resist any attempt by the government at all levels to transfer the burden of austerity on teachers.
He said: “This year, we as labour must tighten our belt to ensure that we look at our leaders eye-ball to eye-ball because if all the feelers we are getting are anything to write home about, it is not going to be rosy, especially public education.
“I attended a meeting very recently and the news we heard was nothing to write home about. So we as labour, are strategizing that anything that will affect the welfare of our members will be resisted.”
It would be recalled that the Boko Haram insurgents had in the last few weeks attacked academic institutions in northern Nigeria where many lives were lost.
