A presidential candidate of the PDP, President
Goodluck Jonathan, who held meetings with the traditional rulers behind
closed doors on Friday and Saturday, expressed gratitude for the warm
welcome.
The President in a Facebook message said: “Over the weekend, I visited his Royal Highness, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III. I also visited the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Oladunni Oyewumi Ajagungbade III. At both occasions, I was overwhelmed by the reception given to my entourage and I by the Obas and the people of both Oyo and Ogbomosho.
“The outpouring of love and support I encountered at both cities strengthened my belief in the unity of this great nation, Nigeria. I thank their Royal Majesties and my dear people of Oyo and Ogbomosho for receiving me so graciously. May God bless Nigeria. GEJ.”
Reportedly, Jonathan asked the Obas to support him in his desire to be re-elected. As part of last efforts to win the March 28 elections, President Goodluck Jonathan was asked to sign an undertaking with leaders of the South-West.
He reportedly promised to give key positions in his government to Yoruba if elected.
However, a reliable source close to the presidency said Jonathan would not go to the extent of signing a pact with the leaders or any South-West group.
During the meeting with the President, Oba Adeyemi III pleaded with politicians to embrace peace in country, during and after the elections. The Oba noted that genuine development can only be achieved in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.
