Stephen Keshi, following the new appointment of German’s Genort Rohr, has lost out in his claim to replace Paul Put as coach of the Burkina Faso National team.
Keshi was rumored to be the front runner for the job due to his age, but when he was linked to the managerial role in South Africa and Equatorial Guinea, the Burkinabe Football Federation has opted against employing him as the country’s national team coach.
Despite he was the preferred choice of the country federation’s president, Col. Sita Sangare, Rohr was named as the new coach on February 25, 2015, Wednesday, thenationonlineng.net reports.
This news comes as a relief to the president of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick, who said a few days ago that he prays Keshi turns down Burkina Faso and commits himself to a new deal, together with the NFF.
To be mentioned, since Nigeria failed to qualify for the just-concluded African Nations Cup (AFCON), the Super Eagles have been without a substantive manager. Keshi’s contract with the NFF lapsed after the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, but he was brought back the by sports minister Tammy Danagogo to guide the team through the 2015 AFCON qualifiers on an interim basis.
However, after a string of poor results, the NFF announced they were parting ways with the coach, on a day he led the team to an unconvincing 3-1 victory over Sudan in Abuja.
Following the direct intervention from the presidency though, Keshi was brought back and eventually led the team to a disastrous end, as the Eagles failed to qualify for the tournament.
Moreover, he has been under pressure to quit by the critics who have lamented the Super Eagles’ absence at the AFCON 2015.
