Retired Soldiers Protest Over 30 Months Unpaid Pension

Ironically, Nigeria’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day was marred by the protest staged by the retired soldiers took to the streets of Akure, capital of Ondo State, over their unpaid pensions.

Boko Haram Militants Attack Kayamula Village Near Maiduguri

According to Sahara Reporters

Islamist militant group, Boko Haram has intensified their attacks in Borno state less than 24 hours after President Goodluck Jonathan paid an unscheduled visit to the state. Villagers invade told SaharaReporters that the militants killed several villagers and burnt down many homes as well as shops. The attack that was initially resisted by vigilantes known as “Civilian Joint Task Force” affected Kayamula, a village some 15km to the Giwa Barracks in Maiduguri.

Kayamula is in Konduga local government area of the state. Some resident, that fled the scene of the attack, said they received advance notice that Boko Haram militants were headed to the village and passed the information to the army but nothing was done to protect the village.

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has congratulated President Goodluck Jonathan for surprise visit to Maiduguri which is considered to be the hotbed of Boko Haram’s terrorism.

Although Nigeria’s main opposition party members praised the President for an unexpected visit to Borno state, they also expect him to visit Chibok, Buni Yadi and Potiskum, among others. APC also asked the President to address the shortage of military equipment as well as the low morale of the troops.
In a statement issued in Makurdi on Friday the party said,“We have always said the President and the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces should never be afraid to visit anywhere in the country. We have always said the President should not just be the Commander-in-Chief but also the Consoler-in-Chief.
We are glad that the President has finally agreed with us. But it is necessary to remind the President that he must not play politics with human lives, and that he must stop putting Jonathan first, Jonathan second and Jonathan third, at the expense of the nation.”
It would be recalled that the parents of the 219 missing Chibok girls are still waiting for their children to come back home. While the families of the boys who were killed at the Federal Government College in Buni Yadi, Yobe State, last year, are just hoping to meet with the President. More details at Premium Times.
