Ironically, Nigeria’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day was
marred by the protest staged by the retired soldiers took to the
streets of Akure, capital of Ondo State, over their unpaid pensions.

Speaking to the journalists the former soldiers expressed their strong regret that the government had neglected them after they courageously fought during the civil
war for the survival and unity of Nigeria.

According to Sahara Reporters, the soldiers win Akure were supported by thousands of disgruntled service men all countrywide. All of them were protesting against the Federal Government’s refusal to pay their pension arrears and gratuities since 2010.

“You cannot continue to waste funds on flowers for the fallen heroes while the living ones are suffering and dying. Let them pay us our arrears,” one of the angry protestors said.

It would be recalled that several months ago the soldiers had already warned the government about their intentions to organize protests if the implementation of the consolidated military salary of the ex-service men was not urgently paid.
