The chairman of the Senate committee on the Federal
Capital Territory (FCT), Smart Adeyemi, has explained why Nigerians
should rally round President Goodluck Jonathan in his bid to implement
the report of 2014 National Conference.
Speaking in Abuja on Monday, March 23, 2014, the senator said if the confab report is implemented that Nigeria will be restructured along the lines of true federalism and engender development.
Speaking further on the benefits of implementing the confab report, Hon. Adeyemi stated that such a development would ensure justice, equity, even development and address the injustice done to different sectors of the polity.
The
senator urged politicians of the South West to put in more effort to
see the actualisation of the report as it provides an answer to the
region’s questions that fuelled their agitation for national
conference.
He said, “I commend the Federal Executive Council for approving the implementation of the confab report and I assure them that the National Assembly is eager to commence work on its final implementation.
“Who does not know that we need restructuring in this country? Who does not know that we need a structure that will ensure better accommodation among the ethnic sub-nationalities? That we need to give identity to our people to address the rising societal tension?
“I am in support of creation of states. Who does not know that the Igbos deserve another state? That the Ijebu deserve a state or the Southern Kaduna people, the Oke-Ogun, Southern Borno or that we need to solve some of the contradictions that stall development in Kogi and that most of the states created were not democratically created?
“We
should allow the states to evolve in line with realities around them.
There is no doubt that Nigeria is due for restructuring and the report
of National conference which will be implemented by Jonathan will
guarantee that.”
“The Yoruba have been at the forefront of restructuring all along and I don’t expect any progressive-minded Nigerian to oppose the confab report. It will guarantee a win, win situation for our country and that is a good reason we must retain President Jonathan in office beyond May 29, 2015.”
