Inspector-General of the Nigeria Police Force
Suleiman Abba strongly adviced the force personnel against using
firearms during the upcoming elections period but for “extreme
circumstances”.
On Saturday, the NPF PR Officer Emmanuel Ojukwu reported that IGP
Abba addressed senior officers in his office. He reminded them the NPF
is supposed to “save and protect lives, and not to kill, contrary to
recent statements in the media”.
Mr. Abba was referring to the Assistant Inspector General of Police Joseph Mbu’s utterance about retaliating and killing “20 persons” for one lost life of a police officer.
“If one of my men is killed, I shall kill twenty of them. But don’t shoot first,” Mr. Mbu has infamously said. “If they shoot you, shoot back in self-defence. Anybody who fires you, fire him back in self-defence.”
In his speech, the IGP reminded that, despite provocation, attributes of a police officer, as contained in the Police Regulations, require him to exercise “tact, patience and tolerance and control of temper in trying situations”.
He further cautioned the personnel against excesses, and reminded that human rights abuse is followed by dire consequences.
In conclusion, Mr. Abba restated his avowed commitment to make sure the law and fundamental rights of Nigerians are observed, and security is provided before, during and after the elections.
