Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State has thanked youths in
the state, who volunteered and came out in their numbers to defend
Maiduguri from being invaded by Boko Haram insurgents Sun News reports.
The Governor who recently rejected the chance to hand over the Boko-Haram ridden state to a Military administrator gave the thumbs-up yesterday, in Maiduguri, the state capital, shortly after rampaging Boko Haram insurgents were repelled as reported by Daily Trust Nigeria.
The insurgents had laid siege on Dalwa from Damboa axis and from the Mafa entry point with a determination to seize Maiduguri and its massive population, including internally displaced persons, taking refuge in the state capital.
The attack occurred one week after the sect launched a similar attack from Damaturu-Jimtilo axis, in a bid to take over Maiduguri.
But the sect met a strong resistance from the military and the Civilian JTF, with the former deploying massive artillery and fighter jets to displace them.
Speaking through his spokesman, Isa Gusau, the governor was quoted to have said: “I received with gratitude, information on how youths from different parts of Borno State, comprising those under the Borno Youths Empowerment Scheme otherwise called ‘Civilian JTF,’ vigilance groups and other residents of Maiduguri, came out of their homes, abandoned their families and with very uncommon courage, they sacrificed their lives and moved to frontlines to support our gallant armed forces in a patriotic battle to defend the State from being seized by insurgents.
“The insurgents, in the early hours of Sunday, February 1, 2015, laid siege on two entry points into Maiduguri: Dalwa community from Damboa axis and from the Mafa-Dikwa axis, with a murderous intention of killing a massive population of residents and internally displaced persons.”
It will be recalled that the alleged sponsors of Boko Haram were revealed by a vigilante group close to the site of Boko Haram camps.
