New Jobs: Buhari And Osinbajo Provide Different Figures

http://punch.cdn.ng/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Muhammadu-Buhari-360x225.jpgThe All Progressives Congress (APC) seniors seem to be providing seriously contradictory figures on the number of jobs they will create in Nigeria.
According to The Herald, in the party’s Christmas message released in Abuja and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, they promised to create 3million year in, year out.

The extract from the statement read:
“Our eight pledges for a better Nigeria, which are highlights of our manifesto, form the core of our social contract with Nigeria. During our first term in office, we pledge to create 3 million new jobs a year through public works programmes and by shifting the economy towards value-added production will be our primary economic target.”
The APC’s presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), speaking on the issue at a rally in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State last Thursday vowed to provide the country residents with 3 million jobs annually and handle the lingering issue of unemployment. The opposition leader added:
“When we come into power, anyone who steals Nigerian money will end up in Kirikiri Maximum Prisons. We are going to make sure that Nigeria’s wealth belongs only to Nigerians.”
At this point the APC’s vice presidential candidate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, appears on the stage and also comments on the problem of unemployment promising however far-from-3million figure if their party is elected.
Osinbajo said they would create “720,000 jobs in its first year” as he delivered a speech in Benin City during the meeting with Edo State people.
“For the first time in the history of Africa, we are introducing a social security scheme. It means the elderly who are poor and the disabled will be given stipends.
“Now the reason why that is important is because our country has continued to be one of the poorest 35 countries in the world despite our resources. We have 110 million people who are extremely poor, so we need to lift people out of poverty.”
A day earlier he made a similar statement in Osogbo City, Osun State, by saying:
“We will provide 20,000 jobs in each of the states of Nigeria when we are elected. We will revive our agricultural sector by providing a ready-made market for farmers and encourage them, as the government will be purchasing their farm produce.”
Nigerians React
People apparently got confused with the controversy. Many readers dropped outrageous comments after having noticed the mismatch.
One Clario wrote below the article by Vanguard about the 720,000 jobs:
“Less than a month ago same Osinbajo promised three million jobs per year, now it is seven hundred and twenty thousand? Hhhhhhmmm…..the goal post is shifting already? Can these people be trusted? I reserve further comments for now!!!”
Apparently, the reader meant the APC’s first Christmas statement.
The same Osinbjao’s statement was criticized by Punch reader Emeka Emedom:
“This APC people or party is very confused and contradicting themselves everyday in desperate bid to win election by all means …The other day , APC presidential candidate Buhari , told the whole Nigerians that he will create 3 million jobs , and today their VP candidate , said they will create 720,000 jobs …So which one to follow or believe … 3 million jobs or 720,000 jobs …All these are white lies to deceive us to vote them into power.”
