Latest reports indicate that no fewer than 6400
supporters of the People Democratic Party, PDP, in Sokoto State,
northern Nigeria, defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC, on
Tuesday.
According to PM NEWS report online, the defecting PDP members were led to the opposition party by a former chairman of Tambuwal local government area, Alhaji Maiakwa Magaji.
Meanwhile, it was disclosed that Governor Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto was on hand to welcome the defectors during his gubernatorial campaign in the area.
It was gathered that the incumbent governor advised the supporters to
ensure that they collect their Permanent Voters Card to enable them
vote in next month’s general election.
Wamakko also advised the leaders of the defectors, Alhaji Ahmed Tafida and Alhaji Magaji to sensitize the new APC supporters on the need not to sell their PVCs.
While addressing the large crowd at the event, the Governor said that the PVCs remain the only tool needed to bring in good leaders through free, fair and credible elections.
He also called on those who are yet to register to do so for the overall development of the nation’s nascent democracy.
The Governor urged the people to accept the rice, semovita and money
being offered by some politicians, stating that, they were returning to
the people part of the money looted from the public treasury.
Wamakko added that politicians offering such bribes do not have the interest of the people at heart.
Also speaking at the occasion, Alhaji Tafida said that the APC represents the hope Nigerians are yearnings for.
He promised to continue to mobilize the people in the area to cast their votes to APC candidates.
For Alhaji Magaji, he informed that the party has embarked on political education, noting that, all their supporters have been told to play politics without bitterness.
The former council boss promised to mobilize supporters in the area to work hard in ensuring the success of the party at the next month’s elections.
