Court sentences 27 to jail over use of illicit drugs

Akwa Ibom State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has secured conviction against 27 traffickers of illicit drugs.

The state Commander of the agency, Mrs. Ruth Obi, who disclosed this yesterday at the command headquarters, Uyo, said the convicted persons, included three females and 24 males.
Obi equally disclosed that the 27 convicted persons now serving various jail terms according to the gravity of their offences were among the 401 suspects arrested within the year under review comprising 353 males and 48 females.
She said exhibits weighing 157.373 kilogrammes and 228 litres of combine (mixture of cannabis sativa and alcohol) a.k.a Ikong Ekpo in Akwa Ibom local dialect, were seized in 2014 during routine illicit drugs joint raids.
“The command during the year under review secured 27 convictions. A total of 163 drug users were referred for counselling and the sex of those counselled include 142 males and 11 females.
“Also in the year 2014, this command carried out 130 drug preventive education lectures and advocacy talks to schools from primary to tertiary institutions, National Youths Service Corps (NYSC), government agencies, civil society organisations, and public enlightenment in our effort to create awareness on the dangers associated with doing drugs and achieving drug demand reduction,” she said.
