APC lambasts Jonathan’s economic policies

All Progressives Congress (APC) has said it agreed with President Goodluck Jonathan that Nigeria is facing a lot of challenges, which did not start today but opined that the problems are increasing instead of abating because of the nebulous and inchoate economic policies of the president’s economic team.

Addressing party’s supporters in Enugu, the South-East spokesperson of the APC, Mr. Osita Okechukwu said: “One is at a loss how else an economy can be down, except now that Nigeria is broke, the naira devalued and we are back into the loop of foreign debt trap.
“Our hardship and the challenges are inflicted by Jonathan regime.
“This is an economic team that never planned for the rainy day. The volatility of crude oil price is of elementary knowledge; therefore no responsible and responsive government will panic from day one as Jonathan’s economic team panicked. In one breath, they said government has no business in business and in another breath they fuel corruption,” he said.
Okechukwu maintained that at the inception of Jonathan’s regime on May 6, 2010, the regime inherited from the late President Umaru Yar’Adua over $10 billion in the Excess Crude Account and from then till last month crude oil price never sold below $90 per barrel.
“Secondly, in the last five years, the Federal Inland Revenue Service has annually been raking in minimum of N4 trillion from corporate and personal income taxes nationwide.
“Furthermore, the Nigeria Customs Service in spite of reckless waivers granted to cronies by the Jonathan’s regime rakes in a minimum of N800 billion annually.
“Accordingly, when you add revenue from LNG and other sources you will agree with me that the hardship Nigerians are facing today is deliberately inflicted by the Jonathan administration.
“Another major disaster could have been averted, if Mr. President had completed the three Greenfield Refineries he awarded on May 13, 2010, one to be located in Bayelsa State, one for Lagos State and one for Kogi State. Definitely, the N2 trillion being squandered annually on the importation of refined petroleum products could have been utilized in the power sector,” Okechukwu said.
