The Governor of Kano state, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso,
has recently described the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a dying
elephant and said that Olusegun Obasanjo’s defection is a fatal blow to the party.
Kwankwaso claimed this on February 23, 2015, while speaking with newsmen, Nigerian Tribune reports.
The governor noted that the former president is a personality of great substance, whose influence as a politician and elder statesman is too important to be ignored, adding that those top notchers in the party underrating his exit were only shedding crocodile tears.
“Obasanjo has got supporters not only in Ogun State, not only in the Southwest, but across the country. For him to come out and say what he said (because most of us, who have worked closely with him, know that he is somebody who always tolerates a lot of things.), I have not seen him since he decided to leave the PDP, but I can comfortably say that so much must have happened in the party for him to come out to tear his card, saying he has left the party.
“Some of these people who made those mistake at the time of our exit, now, they are making the same mistake, and I hope they will handle it in such a way that it doesn’t create more problems for them and even for the country. So, I think PDP has a serious challenge now,” the governor said.
Commenting on the defection of five governors from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Kwankwaso said:
“At the time we were telling people that we can pull a surprise when we left the party, it appears that many people did not believe us. Now that we left, they have started realising the fact that a great damage has been done.”
According to the Nation, Jigawa state governor, Sule Lamido, who is now the northwest coordinator of President Goodluck Jonathan’s presidential campaign, described his five colleagues as non-issue to the progress of the party.
Kwankwaso took the opportunity to react to Lamido’s utterances, describing him as a betrayer.
“I think if there is anybody who should criticise our exit, I believe it shouldn’t come from him or the Niger State governor. I don’t want to join issues with any of my colleagues. Nigerians are the best judges on our actions and utterances; and of course what we have done. I believe that that judgment will be part of what will happen at the next election.
“What we have done is not a secret, it is not something that anybody can hide; and I believe we have done the right thing, we have deepened democracy. PDP is no more the monster it used to be where nobody was important, where people were not respected, even the governor of the most populous state who won election almost single-handedly in the party to come back as a governor.”
At the end of the interview Kwankwaso described Ayodele Fayose’s recent statements against General Muhammadu Buhari as reckless and misguided. Moreover, he stressed that they was unexpected from a person who called himself a leader.
The Kano state governor recently assured journalists in Kano that the APC presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, is in better health than President Goodluck Jonathan.
