Suicide bomber kills self in failed mission

A suicide bomber blew self up yesterday in Gombe State, after being denied access to the premises of the Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA), at Tudunwada in the capital, Gombe. Eight worshippers were injured and rushed to hospital.

Spokesman of the state Police Command, DSP Fwaje Atajiri, confirmed the incident to newsmen, saying the suicide bomber, who rode on a motorcycle, tried to enter the church a few minutes after 8 a.m.
“He came with a motorcycle and tried to enter the place, but as a result of the security measures put in place, he was blocked and the bomb exploded instantly. He was killed,” the spokesman stated.
The failed operation would be the third within the last two weeks in the state capital, as a suicide bomber also attacked a military barracks in the city on New Year’s Eve while on December 22, another explosion rocked the city. Atajiri urged the public to remain vigilant and also report any suspicious movement around them.
An eyewitness, whose house was close to the scene of the blast, Malam Aminu Muhammad, said he was indoors when he heard a loud sound, forcing him to come out.
“When I heard the sound, I immediately came out, and what I saw was horrible.
“I just saw human parts scattered everywhere with blood and motorcycle parts, which the suicide bomber rode on,” Muhammad said.
Secretary, Gombe Specialist Hospital, Malam Abdullahi Isah, however, confirmed that 10 injured persons were brought to the hospital. He said one of them had already been taken to the theatre.
