PDP risks losing Adamawa to opposition – Girei

A People’s Democratic Party, PDP, stalwart in Adamawa State, Senator Abubakar Halilu Girei has warned that, unless President Goodluck Jonathan and the national leadership of the party urgently find a lasting solution to the crises generated by non-conduct of party primaries in the state the party stand the risk of losing the February general elections.

The Senator observed that political jobbers, merchants and contractors have hijacked the party in Adamawa, and now run the PDP as personal estate at the expense of the will of the people
Girei, a foundation member of PDP, who described the Adamawa PDP primaries as a sham, said the alleged primary elections were conducted against the popular will of the Adamawa people and that the validation of the said sham election by the party’s national headquarters has led to crises in the party.
According to the former Senate Services Committee Chairman, six aggrieved governorship aspirants had submitted their petitions to the elections arbitration panel of the party, complaining about the anomalies perpetrated by the party leadership. That due to the prolonged unabated crises in the party, the six governorship aspirants had resorted to institute a case in court for the purpose of seeking redress, for the alleged impunity perpetrated by the PDP leadership at the national level.
Girei, one of the seven gubernatorial aspirants in the state, cleared by the PDP primary elections committee, to vie for the primaries of the party, told Saturday Sun, that discordant tunes are heightening in the rank and file of the party following the conduct of the party primaries in Abuja instead of Adamawa State as stipulated in the Electoral Act.
He however opined that the only way out of the the political logjam is for President Goodluck Jonathan to intervene before the general elections, and ensure that the the issue was amicably resolved.
According to him, those who had worked assiduously for the PDP and the victory of President Jonathan in 2011, have distanced themselves from the Abuja primaries, because the exercise was not popular with the people as they have rejected the primaries.
“As far as we are concerned, no primary election took place in Adamawa. No candidate has emerged through the proper and acceptable way of conducting elections. The sham that took place in Abuja is totally rejected by the people of Adamawa State”
All the stakeholders, including party officials and six out of the seven governorship aspirants have totally dissociated themselves from the so called primaries that took place in Abuja. It is totally unacceptable to us and therefore rejected.”
