2015, the team, comprising, Mrs. Fashola, wives of the Lagos State Government officials and some

Ajeromi General Hospital, Ajegunle while the celebration was rounded off at the Island Maternity in
Lagos.
Giving the reason for the First Baby of the Year celebration, the Commissioner for Health said
apart from being an annual event, it was to celebrate the New Year with those who for some
reasons were in the hospitals for treatment or for delivery of babies, among others during the
New Year celebration.
According to Idris, Lagos State in recent time has witnessed infrastructural development based on solid policy trust and implementation.
Also, he said the government has increased access of people to health, recruited more staff but noted that people from neighboring states are flopping to Lagos for medical care.
Dr. Mrs Olufunmilayo Bankole, medical director/CEO, Isolo General Hospital said one of the major hindrances in the health sector is shortage of personnel. “In the last two years, our staff strength has dropped from 550 to 409 while our patronage is on the increase. Hence, we are under pressure to service the clientele presenting to our facility.”
She listed other challenges facing the hospital as power shortage and shortage of hospital equipment especially in the face of technological advancement in the medical field.
On his part, Dr. Donald Imosemi, Medical Director/ CEO, Lagos Island Maternity Hospital, called for the establishment of an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Island Maternity. He added, “The sewage system and internal plumbing works need complete overhauling to decisively address a looming public health problem.”
