We deserve to win a trophy’: Luiz redemption as Arsenal shock Man City

David Luiz insists Arsenal’s shock 2-0 win over Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-finals proves they deserve to be contenders for major trophies.

Arsenal defender Luiz enjoyed a sweet moment of redemption as his superb display paved the way for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s double to knock out holders City at Wembley.

Luiz was lambasted after giving away a goal before being sent off for conceding a penalty in Arsenal’s 3-0 defeat at City in their first game following the coronavirus hiatus.

But the Brazilian kept City at bay in the rematch and Arsenal, through to a record 21st FA Cup final, will play Chelsea or Manchester United in the showpiece on August 1.

“We have a final to play this season and we will try and win a title for this club because this club deserves to win a trophy,” Luiz told BT Sport.

“It was a great result against one of the best teams in the world. We were humble, we understood the way we had to play and we took the opportunities to score.

“We have to be mature, to understand what level we are in the process.”

Luiz paid tribute to Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who out-witted City boss Pep Guardiola with a shrewd game plan, and saluted his team-mates’ fighting spirit.

“We have an amazing coach but we can’t go from 0 to 100. We are improving. The spirit was great and I’m happy for the team because they deserve it,” Luiz said.

“All the team defended, it is not just the last line. Everybody has to fight and play every ball 100 percent. It’s part of the process.

“We could do more of this in the game so it would maybe be easier. The other team is miles away in front of us but we were humble so when we play we can hurt the opponent and we did that.”

Asked if he was hurt by the criticism following the defeat at City in June, Luiz — who has since signed a new contract — said: “It is part of the football. I understood that football is about surviving.

“Every day you are going to defend the odd thing. I was working hard every single day after my mistakes. I was humble to work more and to work more for the team.”

Malian PM apologises for violent crackdown by security forces

Last Friday, the latest in a series of mass protests in the capital Bamako against Keita turned violent, with security forces firing on protesters, some of whom had occupied state buildings.

Clashes continued for several days, with at least 11 people killed in total, the government has said.

”Unfortunately, there were excesses. What happened is very regrettable. We apologise for it,” Prime Minister Boubou Cisse said in an interview with France 24 television aired late on Thursday. He said prosecutors had opened an investigation into the violence.

On Tuesday, Cisse wrote to the security ministry demanding an explanation for the deployment of an anti-terrorist special operations force on the streets of Bamako during the protests.

The coalition of religious, political and civil society leaders behind the protests accuses Keita of failing to address violence by jihadist groups and ethnic militias, of mismanaging the economy and of enabling corruption.

A delegation from the West African regional bloc ECOWAS is in Bamako this week to try to broker a resolution, but Keita’s opponents have so far refused to withdraw their demand that the president resign.

“It’s inconceivable because the president … was democratically elected,” he said. “I think it’s important … that anyone who occupies position of responsibility in our country gets there through the democratic process.”

The ECOWAS delegation, led by former Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan, is scheduled to meet with Keita and opposition leaders on Friday.

The opposition has urged its supporters to mourn those killed in the protests during Friday prayers, but has backed off earlier calls for a mass prayer meeting in the heart of Bamako.

Photo: Pennywise, pound foolish women go for non-virgin hair ― Sandra Aburime

Foremost Nigeria’s hair care expert and merchant, Sandra Aburime, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Lucious Virgin Hair company has labelled women who prefer to go for other types of hair like braids, weave-ons and others instead of virgin hair as “Penny wise, pound foolish”.

She said, “What many don’t know is that it is more economical to own a virgin hair than to go with braids and weave-on. Take for instance, it cost about 15,000 to braid or fix your hair which would last for 3 weeks or 4 weeks maximum and after that, you would need to fix your hair again spending another 15,000 which if you ask me, makes no sense, it’s more or less like a “penny wise pound foolish” case when you can just get a virgin hair for about 70,000 or less, once and for all, that would last you for 5 years or more depending on how you maintain it before thinking of changing it.”

Speaking further in a chat with Potpourri, she posited “ Every woman has their own choice of hairstyle, it’s their identity, their way of expression, depending on what they feel comfortable in. Every woman’s hair must be well kept regardless of the style.”

Sandra Aburime founded the Lucious Virgin Hair in 2012. Her journey into entrepreneurship began far back in her university days. She began humbly in Benin City, Edo State before relocating to the highbrow Lekki Phase 1 in 2018 where she holds sway as a leading virgin hair merchant.
