The fall from grace of a Korean heiress

As daughter of Korean Air's CEO gets arrested, many are not convinced the case will change behaviour of elite families.

It's hard to overstate the extent of Cho Hyun-ah's fall. Her grandfather founded one of the huge conglomerates, the Chaebols, that spurred South Korea's incredible economic growth. Her father is his main heir, chairman of Hanjin Group, which includes Korean Air, where Cho herself was a Vice President. Cho is third-generation Chaebol, occupying the very highest rung of this ultra-competitive, hierarchical society.

Two Germans killed in Nigeria

Two German Nationals have been shot dead in Nigeria. According to German newspaper, Ostsee Zeitung, the two nationals, both male aged 34 and 20 were working as engineers at Julius Berger and were shot dead last Saturday December 27th while riding on a motorbike in Abuja.

Confirming the incident to AFP, a foreign affairs official said “Unfortunately we can confirm that two German nationals were killed in Nigeria last weekend".

Court in China issues record pollution fine

A high court in China's eastern Jiangsu province has fined six companies 160m yuan (£16.6m; $26m) for polluting rivers, state media report.
The Xinhua news agency said the fine was the highest ever in China as a result of public interest litigation against polluters.

The bodies of two victims of the AirAsia plane crash have been returned to Indonesia's Surabya airport from where the ill-fated jet took off three days ago before plunging into the Java Sea.
The two coffins were taken from an air force plane on Wednesday to a military ambulance to be transported to a hospital for examination and identification.
