15 soldiers get 4yrs imprisonment for refusing to fight Boko Haram

15 Nigerian soldiers who refused orders from their superior to go to the
war front and fight members of the insurgency group, Boko Haram in
Adamawa state recently, were yesterday September 17th sentenced to
4 years imprisonment by a military court that sat at the 23rd Armoured
Brigade in Yola in Adamawa state.

The sentenced soldiers who had been in detention for over three weeks
were convicted on charges ranging from insubordination, dereliction
of duty and refusal to undertake order assigned to them in the war
against the sect members.
Peoples Democratic Party’s Board of Trustees has endorsed President Jonathan as sole candidate for the 2015 Presidential Election.  The board has also approved the timetable and guidelines for party primaries.
Rising from a meeting held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, the board also approved the timetable and guidelines for the party’s primaries and national convention.
A former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana, disclosed this to State House correspondents at the end of the meeting which ended in the early hours of Thursday.
Gana was joined in the briefing by the Deputy President of the Senate, Mr Ike Ekweremadu, and the PDP BoT Secretary, Mr Walid Jibril.
Gana said members of the board unanimously endorsed Jonathan after the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Mr Godswill Akpabio, addressed them on the forum’s earlier endorsement of the president.
Gana said the PDP governors agreed that none of them would contest for the party’s presidential ticket with the president.
He said, “BoT was so informed today about this and that decision by the governors was fully endorsed in a motion by the BoT on its own.
“Having received that news, the BoT also unanimously resolved that because of the excellent work which Mr President has done, he should be the party’s sole candidate.
“The decision was also informed by the mature, humble and dedicated way the president has been leading Nigeria.
“When you add to that, the way he has been handling very sensitive national issues, the Board of Trustees is delighted, convinced and overwhelmed by the fact that we have a very impressive candidate.
“Therefore, the BoT also unanimously resolved that President Goodluck Jonathan be the sole candidate of the party in the forth coming election.
“That was unanimously resolved with a standing ovation and the BoT is very excited.”
He commended the governors for “their wisdom, maturity and love for the party.”
He said, “I want to emphasise that we asked the governors and they said all the PDP governors signed the endorsement document which is going to be presented to the president in another session.”
Gana said Akpkabio also confirmed to the BoT members that Gov. Sule Lamido of Jigawa State phoned him (Akpabio) during the governors’ meeting and directed his deputy, who represented him, to sign the document.
The former minister was responding to a question on whether the decision of the governors was in line with the aspiration of some of their colleagues like Lamido, who was reportedly aspiring for the presidency.
Gana added: “In other words, Lamido authorised his deputy to sign on his behalf, and therefore the answer to your question is that he too endorsed that decision.
“We asked the same question and that is the answer we got.”
On whether internal democracy had not been compromised, Ekweremadu said democracy was a part of the party, going by its name.
He said, “The name of our party is the Peoples Democratic Party. So, democracy is part of us and we are very conscious of the need to have internal democracy in our party.
“But you must remember that consensus building is also part of democracy. For us in the PDP, we believe that the BoT is the conscience of the party.
“So, if the BoT has agreed to endorse Mr President as the candidate of the party, what we are simply saying is that we are persuading every member of the party to accept that position.
“We are not going to force any person, but we are making a strong statement; we are persuading our people strongly to accept this position for the reasons earlier mentioned.
“It is also important for us to know that we need to reward hard work; we need to reward commitment; we need to reward achievement. We need to reward performance.
“We are borrowing from other democracy, including the United States of America where a sitting president who has done so well is expected to be rewarded by his party with a ticket.
“So, we are building a tradition which we hope that those who will come after us will be able to imbibe.
“This is also within the tenet of democracy, not only in Nigeria but in other parts of the world.”
On the new guidelines and timetable for the party’s primaries, Gana said the documents would be presented to the party’s National Executive Council at its meeting on Thursday for endorsement.

The Ebola outbreak could have a catastrophic impact on the economies of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, the World Bank says.
The organisation says the economic impact of the virus could “grow eight-fold” in the “already fragile states”.
However, it says the cost can be limited if the epidemic – and the accompanying fear – is contained by a fast global response.
Ebola has killed 2,461 people in West Africa – the largest ever outbreak.
US President Barack Obama has called the latest outbreak “a threat to global security”, and announced a larger US role in fighting the virus.
The measures announced included ordering 3,000 US troops to the region and building new healthcare facilities.
The announcement came as UN officials described the outbreak as a health crisis “unparalleled in modern times.”
The World Bank’s analysis said billions of dollars could be drained from West African countries by the end of next year if the virus continued to spread.
Under the worst-case scenario, the global development lender predicted that economic growth next year could be reduced by 2.3 percentage points in Guinea and 8.9 percentage points in Sierra Leone.
It predicted Liberia’s economy would be hardest-hit, losing 11.7 percentage points off its growth next year.
The report emphasised the need to tackle the fear of the disease, as well as the virus itself. It said “aversion behaviour”, arising from concerns about contagion, was having a bigger economic impact than the “direct costs” imposed by the epidemic.

Lesbian woman executed for starving girlfriend's 9yr old son to death

Lisa Coleman (left), 38, was pronounced dead at 6:23pm today in Huntsville, Texas. She had been on death row for the past eight years, after being convicted of the 2004 death of her girlfriend's 9yr old son, Davontae Williams (right) who had been beaten and bound, and whose body bore more than 250 scars when officials discovered him on July 26, 2004. He had also been starved, weighing a mere 35 pounds at the time of his death.

Witnesses said Coleman appeared to be at peace with the execution on Wednesday telling her jailers: 'I'm ready. I know where I'm going. I'm not bitter, just ready'. She then smiled and blew kisses at the supporters gathered at her execution and said 'God bless you all'. Her last words were directed at her fellow inmate, Darlie Routier. 'Tell them I finished strong.' Coleman was given a lethal injection at 6pm and was pronounced dead at 6:23pm. No one showed up to represent the victim, Davontae.

She is the sixth woman to be executed in Texas since 1982. The last woman put to death was Suzanne Basso on February 5 of this year.

Davontae's mother and Coleman's former girlfriend, Marcella Williams (pictured left),
is currently serving a life sentence for his death, after reaching a plea deal.
Williams, who was just 14-years-old when she gave birth to Davontae, had been
investigated by Child Protective Services seven times between 1995 and 2002.
In 2002, they lost track of  the family.
Prosecutors in Coleman's case used the charge of kidnapping to justify asking for the death penalty.
According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, they argued that Coleman 'did not
allow Davontae to have visitors, kept him from visiting others by restraining
him and told people he was not at the apartment when he was there.'
The young boy's ultimate cause of death was malnutrition.
Paramedics who arrived on the scene after it was reported the child was having trouble
breathing found him dressed in nothing but bandages and a diaper, and reported
that the boy had clearly been dead for several hours.

Synagogue Church release statement on building collapse, says it was an attack

The Synagogue Church of all Nations has released an official statement via their
Facebook page on the building collapse within their premises on Friday September
12th which has so far claimed over 77 lives. They say it was an attack on the church
and in particular, their leader, T.B Joshua and have vowed to reveal the persons
behind it. (they shared this pic purportedly showing an aircraft close to the
building minutes before the building collapse) Find the statement below..

Emmanuel – God is with us.
The pain of one is the pain of all. It is indeed a sad and painful moment
for the families and friends who have lost loved ones. It is equally so for us in The Synagogue, Church Of All Nations (The SCOAN), under the leadership of Prophet T.B. Joshua.
On Friday, September 12, 2014, at about 12:44pm, one of the buildings on The SCOAN property unexpectedly collapsed, tragically resulting in death and injury. Nigerians and citizens of other nations were affected. This incident was preceded by the appearance of a strange aircraft which flew very low over the building four times and then disappeared.
Since the day of this incident, The Synagogue, Church Of All Nations, its members and partners, have worked in collaboration with the Nigerian, South African and other nations’ authorities to ensure that survivors are rescued, attended to with the best medical treatment, cared for in the most humane and hospitable manner and reunited with their families, while those who passed on - martyrs of the Kingdom of God - are retrieved, identified and treated respectfully.
Amongst those we are working hand-in-hand with, are: The Federal Government of Nigeria, the Government of the Republic of South Africa, Lagos State Government, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA),  the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Lagos State Ministry of Health - doctors and nurses, the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON), the Red Cross, the Nigeria Police Force and various Non-governmental and humanitarian organisations and construction and engineering corporations.
"It is very sad that inaccurate reports are coming from some quarters that we are not cooperating with the rescue teams and other agencies in collating information and providing assistance on the incident. Contrary to this, we want to categorically state that the church has provided assistance when and where required and continues to do so - good Christians are good citizens.
We emphasise our commitment to cooperate with all relevant authorities in establishing the cause of the collapse of the building.
The church views this tragedy as part of an attack on The Synagogue, Church Of All Nations and in particular, Prophet T.B. Joshua. In due course, God will reveal the perpetrators of this unfortunate tragedy.
"We wish to express our gratitude to all who continue to work tirelessly, show their solidarity and share their condolences in this grievous time, particularly all Government and non-Governmental bodies mentioned above, Diplomatic Missions, National and International media houses, society groups, traditional rulers, all concerned citizens and the residents of our local community, Ikotun-Egbe. We equally appreciate all members and partners of The SCOAN and Emmanuel TV, along with Christians and clergy worldwide for their prayers and support.
To all those who lost family members and loved ones, please accept our heart-felt commiserations. No one knows by the present sign or situation what the future holds. We must therefore live each day as if it were our last and leave tomorrow’s trouble for the One who bore our troubles on the cross. We thank God for the martyrs and we pray for the family members and loved ones left behind."
