Teachers Won’t Resume Without Gadgets –NUT

The Nigeria Union of Teachers has directed its members not to resume on September 22, 2014 as directed by the Federal Government, until hand gloves, sanitisers, infrared thermometers, running water and soap have been provided in schools.
The NUT said that in states where the necessary Ebola training and sensitisation had not been done and the gadgets not provided, teachers would continue to remain at home until their state governments respond or the union directed them otherwise.
The union’s president, Michael Olukoya, who said this at a news briefing shortly after holding a meeting with the National Executive Council of the NUT, on Tuesday in Abuja, however, noted that teachers would resume classes only in states where they had been trained to handle Ebola outbreaks in obedience to the Federal Government directive.
He said the union took the decision to protect its members.
He said it was better to delay the resumption of schools till October 13, 2014, when the scourge would have been over than to rush and open the schools only to be faced with EVD attacks.
He accused unnamed “powerful private school proprietors and proprietresses” of instigating government officials to insist on opening the schools on September 22.
Olukoya said, “Where the government insists on September 22 date in spite of our wise counsel, the union will rather direct teachers to resume schools whenever they are sufficiently trained and their schools have been provided with the necessary preventive and protective gadgets.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the teachers have this day resolved to resume classes in obedience to the Federal Government directive in states where teachers have been trained to handle any outbreak, and all the preventive gadgets such as hand gloves, sanitisers, infrared thermometers, running water and soaps have been provided as directed by the Federal Government; (but) in states where the training has not been done and the necessary gadgets not provided, teachers shall continue to remain at home until their state governments respond positively or the union directs them to the contrary.”
The NUT President stated that the 2014 World Teachers’ Day scheduled for October 5 would not hold, saying that teachers should rather be allowed to use the day to organise all necessary sensitisation programmes to get themselves ready for school resumption.
Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan has appealed to the NUT to shelve its plan to embark on strike in protest against government’s directive that schools should resume on September 22.
He made the appeal shortly after the National Executive Council of the union rose from a meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.
Jonathan told State House correspondents that instead of going on strike, the NUT should commend the Federal Government for its efforts at checking the spread of the disease.
“I will plead with NUT and other unions that this does not require industrial action. They should commend government,” he said.

Egypt rejects EU statement on interior affairs

EGYPT - Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has rejected the EU’s concern regarding the situation in the country, calling it “a negative message” at a time when Egypt is combating “terrorism”.
During the 27th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, the EU expressed particular concern over the “indiscriminate detentions and disproportionate sentencing… as well as the alarming situation of Human Rights Defenders and NGOs”.
The EU also stressed the need for a “thorough, independent and transparent investigation into the killing of protesters and security
forces since 30 June 2013 and the need to bring those responsible to justice”.
In reply, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry summoned on Tuesday EU ambassadors to Egypt to inform them of Egypt’s rejection of the EU statement, said a foreign ministry statement Tuesday.
The Egyptian statement said the EU’s stance reflects a “double standard”, which on the one hand calls for international support for the fight against terrorism whilst also attacking Egypt’s own fight against regional terrorism.
The Human Rights Council and the EU held a general debate regarding the situation in several countries, including Syria, Iraq, Ukraine, Sudan and the occupied Palestinian Territory.
The debate highlighted concerns on harassment, human rights abuses and the persecution of political activists and journalists. The debate also discussed the heavy restrictions imposed on civil society and independent media as well as the rise in the persecution of religious and ethnic minorities in several countries.

Rwandan Senate President Resigns after being Accused of Incompetence

Rwanda Senate President BellaNaija
Kigali (dpa/NAN) – The President of the Rwandan Senate, Jean-Damascene Ntawukuriryayo, resigned on Wednesday after he was accused of incompetence.
He was succeeded by his deputy, Bernard Makuza.
Ntawukuriryayo cited personal reasons for the decision to stand down.
He resigned after senators accused him of creating administrative blockages in the upper house of parliament, and of illegally hiring staff.
Ntawukuriryayo heads the Social Democratic Party, the country’s second-biggest party, which is in a coalition government with President Paul Kagame‘s Rwandan Patriotic Front.
Some analysts said his departure could be linked to his close relations with former Prime Minister Pierre Habumuremyi who was sacked in July.
Habumuremyi has denied allegations that he had connections with the Congo-based rebel movement Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda which has staged attacks in Rwanda.

A message declaring that a plant can "cure" Ebola is being widely shared via mobile phone in West Africa - but the claim is not true, and may be offering false hope to those living amidst the outbreak.

"Bitter-Kola has been internationally verified to cure Ebola", reads the note, which is being circulated on messaging apps and other social media. "Pls do not forget to share cheers!!!" it concludes.

Notes like this are being widely shared on messaging apps about Ebola and Kola

Bitter-Kola is another name for Garcinia kola - a plant that grows in parts of West Africa and has been used for centuries in folk medicine to treat colds and fevers.

So where did the idea come from, and how has it taken hold?

Back in 1999, some early stage laboratory tests did indeed show promising signs that a compound from the plant might halt the deadly virus. Crucially, the findings were never taken forward into more advanced tests, either on animals or humans, and no drug was ever approved for use. Today, an array of treatments are being investigated, but none involve Garcinia kola.

Nurses in Liberia preparing Ebola victim bodies for burial in the isolation unit of a ELWA Hospital, in Monrovia

The story has spread so widely that the Health Minister, Onyebuchi Chukwu, has made a statement refuting its claims. "As I speak to you now, there is no proof yet of any such fruit. I repeat, there is no proof yet of any fruit," he said.

The health ministries in Sierra Leone and Liberia have done the same.
